WBG Pioneers, the World Bank Group’s Internship Program, offers undergraduate and postgraduate students a high impact learning experience at the heart of global development. Participants gain hands on experience in a diverse and dynamic environment, contribute fresh perspectives and innovative ideas, and connect with international professionals working to end poverty on a livable planet.
The Environmental and Social (E&S) team supports IFC investment operations by ensuring compliance with IFC Performance Standards and maximizing development impact throughout the project lifecycle. The team is responsible for E&S screening, due diligence, and portfolio supervision across multiple sectors in Nigeria, Central, and Southern Africa. With growing portfolio complexity and increased reporting requirements, there is a heightened need for structured data management, advanced analytics, and robust E&S documentation management.
This internship will assist E&S specialists in enhancing data-driven risk identification, portfolio monitoring, and reporting processes. This role will also contribute to greater consistency and efficiency in E&S documentation and supervision activities, supporting the team’s ability to deliver high-quality outcomes.
Duties and Responsibilities
E&S Due Diligence
• Support E&S screening of transactions under IFC Performance Standards and applicable internal guidance documents, providing input to RILs.
• Review E&S documentation (ESIAs, ESMS documents, and other client records) and efficiently compile due diligence inputs for internal systems such as ESG360 and ESGDocs.
Portfolio Monitoring & Supervision
• Track ESAP completion evidence and update status in ESG360 and Disclosure Portal.
• Support review of Annual Monitoring Reports (AMRs) and compile review reports.
• Support LESSs with supervision missions by conducting pre-mission document review, tracking critical E&S issues and action items and reporting to the LESSs.
• Maintain structured supervision records and documentation in ESG360 and iPortal.
E&S Data Analytics and Reporting
• Prepare monthly E&S reports for management and E&S teams.
• Analyze portfolio performance trends to identify emerging E&S risks and overall performance.
Knowledge Management
• Organize and maintain E&S documentation repositories (ESG Docs).
• Capture and summarize lessons learned from supervision activities to facilitate internal knowledge sharing.
Selection Criteria
• Candidates must be currently enrolled in, or in the final year of a master’s degree program and must hold a bachelor’s degree in environmental science or engineering, international development, or natural sciences.
• Candidates must have at least two years of relevant professional experience.
• Demonstrated interest in development work and the World Bank Group’s mission
• Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills
• Effective written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work effectively in diverse, team-based environments
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities within tight deadlines
• Proficiency in English in English is required. Knowledge of French is considered an advantage.
