Background/Organizational Context
As part of the World Bank Group (WB), the Integrity Vice Presidency (INT) shares in the WB’s overall mission in alleviating poverty and achieving a shared and sustainable prosperity in client countries. INT’s fundamental role within the WB is to help detect, prevent, and deter fraud and corruption in the use of the WB’s financial resources, so that those resources are used effectively to benefit the poor people that they are intended to reach.
Forensic Services Unit (FSU) supports INT’s fraud and corruption investigations, forensic reviews, and integrity risk mitigation across WBG-funded operations, Bank Group staff matters, vendors, and client-country contexts. FSU combines financial, technology (digital forensic and fraud analytics) and investigative skills for broader preventive and advisory work, including diagnosing vulnerabilities, quantifying losses, strengthening financial management and procurement controls. FSU also provides capacity building, knowledge sharing, external engagement, internal FSU strategy/reporting, and the use of forensic technologies such as digital forensics, eDiscovery, fraud analytics, AI/GenAI, blockchain, and cryptocurrency tools, while maintaining strong working relationships across INT, the Bank Group, development partners, and client countries.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Digital Forensic Intern will support Digital Forensics Lab Specialists in the identification, forensic acquisition, triage, preservation, processing, and organization of digital evidence and data. The intern will assist with the use of digital forensic and eDiscovery tools, including uploading, processing, and preparing data for review under the supervision of DF Lab Specialists. The role requires adherence to applicable global, WBG, INT, and VPU standards for evidence handling, data collection, processing, storage, retention, and confidentiality throughout the evidence lifecycle. The intern will also support the management and maintenance of DF Lab assets, including hardware and software inventory, evidence storage, archive organization, and general lab readiness. Additional duties may be assigned based on operational needs.
Selection Criteria
•Enrollment in, or recent completion of, a Bachelor’s or postgraduate degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Digital Forensics, Information Systems, Data Science, or a related discipline.
•Relevant technical certifications or training are desirable, including EnCE, CFCE, GCFA, GCFE, CEH, Cellebrite, Magnet AXIOM, Relativity Certified Administrator, or other digital forensics/eDiscovery certifications.
•Foundational knowledge of digital forensics, digital evidence handling, the eDiscovery lifecycle (EDRM), cryptography/encryption, operating systems, networking, and basic data security principles. Basic familiarity with Windows, Linux, and macOS environments, including file systems, user artifacts, and basic scripting or command-line usage.
•Exposure to digital forensic or eDiscovery tools such as EnCase, FTK, Magnet AXIOM, Oxygen, Cellebrite, Intella, RelativityOne, or comparable platforms is desirable.
•Interest in researching emerging technologies relevant to investigations, including AI/GenAI, blockchain, cryptocurrency, cloud platforms, mobile devices, and collaboration tools.
•Strong analytical, research, documentation, and problem-solving skills, with attention to accuracy, confidentiality, and defensible handling of information. Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document technical steps clearly and escalate issues appropriately.
•Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse, team-based environment and demonstrate professionalism, discretion, and respect for sensitive information. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks, maintain accurate records, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced operational environment.
•Demonstrated client orientation, drive for results, teamwork, collaboration, research ability, and analytical thinking.
Willingness and ability to travel, if required.
No-Fee Internship Eligibility
This position is offered under the WBG Pioneers No-Fee Internship Track. Students may be offered a no-fee STT appointment provided that they either: (a) are enrolled in a Master's, PhD, or similar graduate program during the entire internship (or are in the fifth year or higher of a degree program in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages) and provide an official letter from their university confirming that the internship fulfills academic requirements for at least one term of study; or (b) are enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies and receive a stipend from their university at least equivalent to the minimum STT T1 fee level in effect at the start of the assignment, as confirmed by an official university letter.
