The Opportunity
Rare is building a modern, performance-driven digital fundraising engine, and this role sits at the center of that effort.
As Senior Manager, Email Marketing & Digital Fundraising, you will own and scale Rare’s email program and play a leadership role in shaping our digital donor journey. You’ll blend strategy and execution, experimentation and insight, creativity and data; using the latest performance marketing approaches to grow high-quality audiences, deepen engagement, and drive revenue.
Rare is making a significant investment in Performance Marketing (advertising, search, etc.) to fuel growth of its donor base. This role will work alongside consultants, vendors and colleagues to grow that program. This is an ideal role for someone who loves building programs, thrives in test-and-learn environments, and is excited to apply sophisticated lifecycle marketing techniques in service of real-world impact.
You’ll report to the VP, Marketing & Communications and work closely with colleagues across Marketing, Communications, and Development.
What You’ll Do
Email Marketing & Lifecycle Growth
Rare currently maintains a modest but high-potential email program. You’ll take it to the next level—expanding reach, increasing engagement, and evolving how and when we communicate.
- Own Rare’s email marketing strategy end to end; from acquisition through long-term stewardship
- Grow and optimize email acquisition across Rare’s digital ecosystem (e.g., Rare.org, webinars, campaigns)
- Lead day-to-day email operations: creation, targeting, deployment, and optimization
- Serve as Rare’s in-house expert on Salesforce Marketing Cloud (SFMC)
- Design and deploy sophisticated, automated Journeys that support engagement and fundraising goals
- Manage and optimize Data Extensions for segmentation, suppression, reactivation, and personalization
- Partner closely with Rare’s Salesforce Admin to ensure clean, reliable data flows across systems
- Develop and execute A/B and multivariate testing to improve key performance metrics
- Monitor performance, surface insights, and translate data into clear recommendations for improvement
Digital Fundraising & Performance Marketing
Digital fundraising at Rare is evolving rapidly, and you’ll help define how it scales.
- Lead digital fundraising efforts for online gifts under $5K, in close partnership with Development
- Collaborate with Development to cultivate, steward, and upgrade emerging donor segments
- Support gift officers with targeted email outreach to their portfolios using SFMC where appropriate
- Own strategy and execution for year-end digital fundraising and key campaigns throughout the year
- Bring a cross-channel mindset to the donor journey; aligning email, website, and social touchpoints
- Report on campaign performance, donor health, churn, and lifecycle trends
- Use data to continuously refine strategy, messaging, and timing
What You Bring
- 5+ years of relevant experience in email marketing and/or digital fundraising
- Deep, hands-on expertise with Salesforce Marketing Cloud, including Journeys and Data Extensions, or same level expertise with similar cloud-based digital marketing platforms
- Proven experience planning and executing year-end fundraising campaigns
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to translate data into actionable insights and compelling narratives
- Familiarity with Google Analytics (or similar tools)
- Working knowledge of HTML and CSS for email troubleshooting and optimization
- Understanding of modern design principles; experience with tools like Adobe a plus
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Highly organized, adaptable, and comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fast-moving environment
