The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is responding to its 17th Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak, confirmed in May 2026 and affecting Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces. The situation remains complex and evolving, with transmission occurring in both community and health-care settings. Response efforts are led by national authorities in a context shaped by health system limitations, logistical constraints, insecurity, displacement, and diverse community perceptions influencing health-seeking behaviors.
UNICEF supports the Government through a multi-sectoral approach, focusing on community engagement, surveillance, infection prevention, and the continuity of essential services for vulnerable populations.
This context requires strong coordination, adaptability, and cultural sensitivity to support effective and equitable response efforts, particularly for children and at-risk communities.
How can you make a difference?
Under the supervision of the Prevention of and Response to Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) Manager, the PSEA Officer, based in Bunia and expected to travel within Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu, will support the implementation of the PSEA component of the Ebola response plan by strengthening accountability systems through innovative approaches and ensuring effective prevention of and response to sexual exploitation and abuse. This role includes providing technical support to PSEA focal points, government counterparts, and civil society partners, as well as close collaboration with the Child Protection team for victim assistance and the Social and Behavior Change (SBC) team for community engagement. The specialist will represent UNICEF in PSEA coordination mechanisms in the field and will ensure that interventions are adapted to the dual context of the Ebola epidemic and the ongoing conflict. Following the Ebola outbreak, he/she will contribute to the integration and sustainability of PSEA efforts within recovery programs.
