Afghanistan faces significant natural hazard risks, including earthquakes, floods, droughts, landslides, sandstorms, and avalanches. These recurring events are intensified by extreme winter conditions, especially in mountainous regions that comprise approximately 63% of the country. Many rural households lack adequate protection, and the limited capacity of government institutions further exacerbates the vulnerabilities of affected and displaced families.
To help reduce climate-induced migration, and in coordination with the Disaster Resilience and Climate Change Adaptation (DRCCA) unit, IOM Afghanistan implements Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) activities aimed at strengthening the resilience of disaster-prone communities. These efforts focus on enhancing preparedness and response capacities at the national, provincial, and community levels, empowering communities to better anticipate and manage potential hazards. Central to these initiatives are Community-Based Disaster Risk Management, institutional development, and other integrated DRCCA activities. The Programme Associate (DRCCA) will support the implementation and delivery of these activities.
