Result of Service
Expected result of services: 1. Lead the development and implementation of the AR3, including refinement of the concept note and implementation approach, coordination with the core team, and engagement with key partners and stakeholders. 2. Conduct the assessment, selection, and implementation of pilot country activities, including the identification and engagement of technical partners, provision of technical guidance, and documentation of lessons learned and opportunities for scale-up. 3. Develop proposals for the Global Legacy Fund, including recommendations on its governance structure, operational framework, and implementation modalities. 4. Lead stakeholder consultations and information-sharing activities with governments, partners, and other relevant organizations, and support the integration of stakeholder feedback into the AR3 implementation plan. 5. Prepare progress reports, technical briefings, presentations, and other materials of AR3 to support stakeholder engagement, key events, and senior management decision-making. 6. Provide technical expertise for the circularity work stream, including the refinement of the concept note for metrics development, stakeholder engagement, and related technical frameworks. 7. Support the development, review, and finalization of business cases, technical analyses, and knowledge products to advance circularity across mineral and metal value chains.

Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its Industry and Economy Division provides solutions to decision-makers and helps change the business environment by offering platforms for multi- stakeholder dialogue and cooperation, innovative policy options, pilot projects and creative market mechanisms to improve the quality of the environment and the well-being of citizens. It promotes sustainable patterns of consumption and production, makes efficient use of natural resources, ensures safe management of chemicals and contributes to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. This opportunity is located within the Mining Unit at UNEP. The Unit promotes responsible mining and sustainable use of mineral resources, including through resource efficiency and circularity. UNEP’s work on mining has been covering the following priority areas: 1. Aligning legal and policy frameworks to responsible mining and sustainable and circular use of mineral resources; 2. Understanding business models for circularity, making the business case, and integrating it in industry standards and global traceability systems; 3. Identifying and promoting economic and financial instruments and investment flows, for more responsible mining and circular/sustainable use of mineral resources. The Mining Unit is seeking a consultant to lead its work on global mining legacy funds and provide technical support to circularity metrics through programme development, stakeholder engagement, and implementation support. The consultant will work home-based, under the supervision of the programme officer coordinating global mining legacy funds, of Mining unit in the Industry and Economy Division.
Qualifications/special skills
- Advanced university degree in a field related to geosciences, environmental studies, environmental engineering, chemical engineering, or equivalent experience. A first level degree with an additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree - At least five (5) years of work experience in activities and projects related to mine closure and remediation of legacy mining sites, sustainable consumption and production, and circular economy; - Experience in working with national governments in developing countries is required; - Experience in working in and with the private sector is required, especially in the mining industry; - Experience in working with the United Nations and international organisations is required; - Very sophisticated writing skills with proven track records of developing high-quality technical documents, and good verbal communication skills with proven ability to liaise with external stakeholders in governments, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, and the private sector. - Experience on development of industry mining standard is desirable. - Knowledge of the UN System is an advantage - Excellent management of office computing tools including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and data analysis and standard statistical techniques.
