Duties and Responsibilities
Org. Setting and Reporting The Environment and Development Division is seeking one intern for a minimum of four months (preferably six, the maximum internship duration) to support the production of United Nations meeting reports and knowledge products derived from a verified transcript corpus of intergovernmental meetings. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. A fully remote (home-based) arrangement is possible, subject to approval. The role combines substantive research on Asia-Pacific environment and development topics with editorial quality assurance and the structured verification of meeting records. It suits a candidate with a development or international-relations background, strong English, and comfort working with data and documents. The intern will primarily support transcript and report quality assurance, substantive research and knowledge management, and editorial review linked to ongoing meeting-reporting initiatives. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background and the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to: 1. Perform quality assurance on meeting transcripts and reports, including proofreading, verification of speaker identifications against official rosters and programmes, and structured error and garble audits (35%) 2. Conduct substantive research and knowledge management on Asia-Pacific environment and development topics, including background notes, case studies, briefing material and agenda or thematic mapping (30%) 3. Support editorial review of draft reports against United Nations editorial and house style, and validate structured extractions such as country requests and thematic tags (25%) 4. Assist with organising and documenting the meeting-report knowledge base and supporting follow-up tasks (10%)
Qualifications/special skills
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) related to development studies, international relations, public policy, environmental policy, area studies, communications, or related disciplines; or (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent) related to development studies, international relations, public policy, environmental policy, area studies, communications, or related disciplines. Special skills (a) Excellent written English and demonstrable editing or proofreading ability are required. (b) Familiarity with United Nations processes, intergovernmental meetings, or Asia-Pacific development policy is desirable. (c) Comfort working with spreadsheets and structured documents (Excel, Word) is required, and basic data literacy is an asset. (d) Strong attention to detail, source-checking discipline, and reliability with repetitive verification tasks are essential. (e) Interest in the responsible use of AI-assisted workflows is desirable. Familiarity with the responsible use of AI tools to improve work quality and efficiency, in line with UN guidelines, is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the Internship Programme. Knowledge of another language used in Asia-Pacific is an asset (e.g. Bengali, Nepali, Hindi, Urdu, Sinhala, Bahasa Indonesia, Thai).
