Junior Consultant - Programme Coordinator

The Consultant/Individual Contractor will provide technical, coordination, monitoring, reporting, analytical and knowledge-management support to strengthen the coherent implementation of UNEP’s Chemicals and Pollution Action Subprogramme, ensuring alignment with UNEP’s MTS 2026–2029 and PoW 2026–2027 through updated portfolio and project pipeline tracking, portfolio reviews, quality assurance of project concepts and documents, guidance on IPMR workflows, development of planning and monitoring tools, consolidation of corporate and donor reporting inputs, preparation of CPR and governance briefing materials, analysis of programme interlinkages and strategic priorities, organization and documentation of coordination meetings and pollution dialogues, follow-up on action points, maintenance of a knowledge repository, and preparation of synthesis briefs on lessons learned, good practices, challenges and opportunities across the portfolio.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UN Environment's mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP's Industry and Economy Division provides solutions for economic decision-makers and helps change the business environment by offering platforms for dialogue and cooperation, innovative policy options, pilot projects and creative market mechanisms. The Industry Innovation Branch promotes circular economy, resource efficiency and sustainable consumption and production (SCP) approaches and practices. This engaging with and providing technical support to governments, the business community and civil society organizations. It further works on building circularity in high-impact sectors (textile, plastics, electronics, and metals), by implementing innovative actions on policy, business and technology, as well as convening relevant stakeholders to promote the transition towards sustainability and circularity in sectors. The Consultant/Individual Contractor will support the Chemicals and Pollution Action Subprogramme within UNEP’s Industry and Economy Division. This role involves supporting the portfolio coordination, strategic planning, implementation, monitoring, and reporting, and knowledge management of pollution action initiatives, ensuring alignment with UNEP’s MTS 2026-2029 and PoW 2026-2027. The role requires close collaboration with various divisions, subprogrammes, and regional offices to promote coherence and synergies across UNEP’s pollution-related activities. The consultant shall report directly to the Global Coordinator of Chemicals and Pollution Action Subprogramme, in the Industry and Economy Division, UNEP.

Qualifications/special skills

A master’s degree in environmental sciences, natural resources management, engineering, international development, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree with 2 years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. At least 2 years of progressively responsible experience in programme coordination, strategic planning, monitoring and reporting, or environmental programme implementation, preferably in chemicals, pollution, waste management, circular economy, environmental governance, GEF chemicals and waste programming, or related environmental policy/programme areas, is required. Prior experience with development projects, environment, and developing country contexts is an asset.

Languages

Fluency in English (oral and written) is required. Working knowledge of another UN language would be an asset.
