Duties and Responsibilities

The second phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) held in Tunis on 16–18 November 2005 requested the Secretary-General to convene “a new forum for multistakeholder policy dialogue – the Internet Governance Forum (IGF).” The mandate of the IGF, as outlined in Paragraph 72 of the Tunis Agenda for the Information Society, is to discuss the main public policy issues related to Internet governance in order to foster sustainability, robustness, security, stability, and development of the Internet. In December 2026, the General Assembly made the IGF a permanent forum of the United Nations. This internship is located in the IGF Secretariat, based at the United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG). The intern will support the team in technical and program facilitation and assist with the further development of the annual IGF meeting and IGF intersessional activities, including capacity development. The intern’s tasks will include: • Providing support to the IGF’s program platforms, such as the interactive scheduling system, bilateral room reservation system, and remote participation setup. • Supporting technical and substantive actions related to the IGF website functions and design. • Assisting with the functionality of the IGF web application. • Supporting the implementation of the social media campaign. • Assisting in the delivery of training for remote participation support staff. • Compiling annual participation statistics and media analysis. • Support planning and development of the IGF intersessional work, national, regional and youth IGF initiatives and capacity development. • Supporting interface design or layout of final IGF output documents. • Assisting with other program components related to intersessional work and the annual meeting.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts in desirable. Ability to design surveys and polls is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
