Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environment sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UN Environment Programme/New York Office is responsible for strategic linkages with the UN system, key partners, and stakeholders in the context of the interagency and intergovernmental processes based on UN Headquarters. Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Senior Programme Management Officer of UNEP New York Office, the intern will: • Attend and summarize key discussions on meetings at UN Headquarters, including meetings organized by the UN General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Security Council and UN missions in New York • Research and summarize key developments related to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and other outcomes from relevant intergovernmental processes, including coverage of discussions in relevant inter-governmental fora. • Conducting research to contribute to UNEP’s analytical products on trends and developments in relevant intergovernmental processes held in the UN Headquarters. • Assist in planning and organising meetings, briefings, roundtables, seminars and other UNEP events in UN Headquarters. • Assist in preparing documents arrangements for the organization of UNEP meetings, briefings, roundtables, seminars and other events. The intern will work 40 hours per week, five days per week, from Monday to Friday, full time at the UNEP New York Office.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); preferably enrolled in an advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) with a focus on environmental sciences, natural resource management, communication or international relations c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation. The internship is for a period of six (6) months. It is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days (35-40 hours) per week. The intern will be provided with a laptop and a pass to access office space in the Albano building (305 E 46th St, New York, NY 10017). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. A certified copy of degree certificate (if you have already graduated).
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.
