Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Resident Coordinator's Office (RCO) in North Macedonia leads and coordinates the work of the UN Country Team (UNCT) in support of the Government's national development priorities and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. As part of the UN's ongoing efforts to strengthen digital transformation, data governance, and evidence-based decision-making, the RCO is expanding its capacity to support the UNCT in the responsible adoption of digital tools, artificial intelligence (AI), and modern data practices. The UN Development Coordination Office (DCO) has placed increasing emphasis on digital transformation, data-driven programming, and the responsible use of emerging technologies as cross-cutting priorities for Resident Coordinator Offices worldwide. In this context, the RCO in North Macedonia seeks a motivated intern to support its work on digital transformation, data governance, and capacity building across the UNCT, contributing directly to a more coordinated, evidence-based, and digitally enabled UN presence in the country. Under the supervision of the Data Specialist of RCO, the intern will support the following areas of work: 1. Digital Transformation & Innovation • Support the implementation of digital transformation initiatives across the UNCT. • Scan and analyze global, regional, and national trends in digitalization and emerging technologies. • Conduct research on AI governance, digital public infrastructure, digital inclusion, digital rights, and responsible technology use. • Support the preparation of policy briefs, analytical notes, presentations, and recommendations for RCO and UNCT leadership. 2. Stakeholder Coordination • Support engagement with government institutions, academia, the private sector, civil society, innovation hubs, and development partners. • Support and coordinate the work on document consultations, working groups, and stakeholder meetings. • Support the process of maintainomg stakeholder mapping and partnership databases. 3. Emerging Technologies & Artificial Intelligence • Support organizing workshops, policy dialogues, roundtables, and discussions on AI, emerging technologies, and digital transformation. • Draft knowledge products and briefing materials for UN. • Monitor international developments and good practices related to AI governance and digital policy. 4. Data Governance & Data Management • Support data governance initiatives and the implementation of data standards across the UNCT. • Assist with data quality assurance, data documentation, metadata management, and knowledge management processes. • Support the collection, cleaning, analysis, and interpretation of datasets. • Support the processes for results monitoring and reporting efforts, including inputs to UN INFO and related reporting systems. 5. Data Analytics & Visualization • Support the develop dashboards and visual analytics products to support UNCT decision-making. • Draft data visualizations to support reporting, planning, and communication needs. • Support the management of data repositories and information systems. 6. Capacity Building & Technical Support • Assist in delivering hands-on training sessions for UN staff on: – Power BI – Data visualization – Data analytics fundamentals – AI productivity tools – Digital collaboration tools • Support the process of developing user guides, learning materials, and training modules.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). Studies in in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Digital Transformation, Public Policy, Data Analytics, Statistics, Economics, Innovation Management, Artificial Intelligence, Development Studies, or a related field is desired. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master's or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor's, Master's or PH.D. Prior exposure to public policy, international development, or the UN system is desirable.

Languages

Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Macedonian and Albanian language is desirable.

The intern must have access to a computer and reliable internet connection. The UN Mission will provide access to necessary software and databases.

Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
