Duties and Responsibilities
Org. Setting and Reporting The UN Secretary-General launched on 1 January 2019 a bold global reform which repositioned the UN Development System to deliver more effectively and efficiently with the achievement of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. Goals more effectively and efficiently. As part of this reform, UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCOs), led by empowered and independent UN Resident Coordinators, support countries in achieving their development priorities and attaining the SDGs. This internship is based in the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office in Cabo Verde. The internship is UNPAID and full-time, for a minimum period of two months and up to a maximum period of six months. Flexible working arrangements may be considered in accordance with ST/AI/2020/1 and office requirements and the interns are expected to work on a full-time basis under the supervision of a designated staff member. Reporting to the Communications Officer, the intern will support the communications and public information work of the RCO and will gain first-hand experience of the activities of the UN Country Team through the RCO, including providing support for strategic communications, digital outreach, media monitoring, raising awareness of UN results, organizing public events and creating communication products that promote the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals in Cabo Verde. Responsibilities: • Support the production of simple, engaging communication products, with a particular focus on short videos, reels, photos, visual briefs, infographics and other multimedia content, using mobile devices and accessible/free software. • Draft, edit and adapt communication materials including press releases, web stories, social media posts, reports, briefing notes, captions, talking points and visibility materials for RCO and UN Country Team activities. • Assist in updating and maintaining the UN Cabo Verde website and social media platforms, ensuring content is timely, accurate and audience friendly. • Support photography, basic video recording and editing, graphic design, formatting and the preparation of communication assets for meetings, campaigns, public events and external engagements. • Support media monitoring, tracking public information opportunities and compiling background information for press briefings and preparing media and communications summaries. • Assist in organizing communication-related events, campaigns, workshops, consultations and public outreach activities, providing logistical and administrative support. • Maintain communication calendars, mailing lists, media contacts, photo/video archives, internal databases and other communication tools and repositories. • Support the coordination of communication and visibility activities with UN agencies, partners, government counterparts, civil society, youth networks, academia, and other stakeholders. • Perform other related support tasks within the scope of the internship learning objectives, as required by the supervisor.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme. Preferred area of study: Advanced university studies or recent degree completion in one or more of the following areas: Communication, Journalism, Public Information, International Relations, Political Science, Public Policy, Development Studies, Marketing, Digital Media or Multimedia Production, Social Sciences or other related fields. Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Teams and common digital collaboration tools. The ability to draft news articles, social media posts, captions and audience-friendly content is desirable. The ability to produce simple photos, short videos, reels, visual content and/or graphics using mobile devices and accessible/free software would also be an advantage. Experience of, or familiarity with, website updates, social media management, media monitoring or multimedia editing tools would be an advantage.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Fluency in English and Portuguese is required for this internship. Knowledge of Spanish and French would be desirable.

Desirable Skills: • Previous academic, volunteer or professional experience related to communications, journalism, social media, photography, video production, graphic design, public information, development cooperation or event coordination. • Knowledge of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the UN system, and Cabo Verde's development context. • Experience with social media content creation, basic graphic design tools, multimedia editing applications, photography, video editing, website content management or communication platforms is an asset. • Ability to write in Portuguese and English is desirable; knowledge of French or Spanish is an asset.
