Duties and Responsibilities
This post is in the Information, Communication and Technology Services Section (ICTSS), at the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). Under the direct supervision of the Chief, ICTSS, and the day-to-day guidance of the Network and Communications (NetCom) Team Leader, the intern will provide technical and operational support to the Publications, Conference, and Knowledge Management Division (PCKMD), within the Information and Communications Technology Services Section (ICTSS). The daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, assigned projects, and the internship period. The intern will contribute to the following key initiatives: 1. Support for LAN & WLAN Upgrade Works • Provide technical support for the installation, configuration, and testing of new wireless access points and LAN equipment. • Assist in upgrading existing network infrastructure components, ensuring optimal coverage, speed, and reliability. • Help conduct site surveys and signal strength analysis to validate WLAN performance. • Assist with documenting configurations, device placements, and test results for project records. 2. Assist with Network Troubleshooting, Maintenance, and Monitoring • Assist the team in diagnosing and resolving connectivity issues, bandwidth bottlenecks, and device configuration errors. • Support the review and maintenance of firewall rules and configurations. • Help document observed security risks, incidents, and responses for reporting and learning purposes. • Assist in monitoring network performance using diagnostic tools and contribute to preparing performance reports. • Support routine maintenance tasks, including firmware and software updates on network devices. • Help maintain accurate network topology diagrams and device inventories. • Assist in reviewing security policies and compliance status under team guidance. • Support evaluation of security considerations for field devices, sensors, and IoT devices within the network environment. 3. Other Activities as Needed • Provide general ICT support for other projects or technical activities within ICTSS as assigned. • Assist with preparation of technical documentation, standard operating procedures, and user guides. • Participate in team meetings, project planning sessions, and knowledge-sharing activities. • Support asset management, network equipment inventory updates, and related administrative tasks.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariate.
