Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is found in the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Business and Human Rights Section (BHRS), Rule of Law, Accountability and Civic Space Branch (RACS), Thematic and Special Procedures Division (TSP) in Geneva. The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Chief of the Business and Human Rights Section.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Human Rights Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Conducts substantive research and analysis of business and human rights issues/events and assesses their impact on the human rights situation in assigned contexts. • Ensures business and human rights issues, including their gender equality dimensions considerations, are integrated into political, humanitarian and economic efforts and programme. • Defines work plan for area assigned in accordance with established terms of reference. • Represents OHCHR at events and working level meetings. • Coordinates capacity-building efforts on business and human rights. • Writes a variety of reports, communications, briefings, statements, etc., on subjects relating to business and human rights and to the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, to the Human Rights Council, the General Assembly, and to policy-making bodies. • Drafts statements, speech input, briefing notes for the High Commissioner, Deputy High Commissioner, Chief Branch and Chief of Section. • Initiates, together with colleagues in OHCHR, the issuance of publications on themes of business and human rights. • Responds to requests for information relating to business and human rights, including highly technical questions received through the BHR Helpdesk. • Participates in the organizational and substantive aspects of meetings, seminars, and symposia etc. planned or supported by OHCHR, and undertakes and coordinates public information and awareness raising activities, including preparing information materials as appropriate. • Engages with various stakeholders, and plans and implements strategies and actions to foster business and human rights at national, regional and international levels. • Provides guidance to new/junior staff. • Performs other related duties as required.

This includes knowledge and experience working with states, business and other stakeholders in implementing business and human rights projects focusing on the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. Knowledge of institutional mandates of human rights organizations, prevailing policies and procedures. Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in human rights, law, political science, international relations, social sciences, economics, public policy, sustainable development, humanitarian affairs or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law or related area is required. Experience working on business and human rights is required. Experience conducting research on business and human rights and providing analytical advice and inputs for human rights reports and programmes is required. Experience in project management and leading staff is required.
