About the Context
Niger is facing a complex humanitarian context driven by displacement, population movements, and regional dynamics, particularly in border areas. The Diffa region continues to be affected by the Lake Chad Basin crisis, while Maradi hosts a significant refugee population alongside ongoing cross-border movements from Nigeria. Niger also serves as both a country of asylum and a transit route towards North Africa. According to the 2025 Humanitarian Needs Overview (HNO), an estimated 2.6 million people need assistance across much of the country, with 1.6 million people projected to require humanitarian support in 2026.
In this context, NRC has been present in Niger since 2019, delivering assistance to displaced and vulnerable populations. NRC’s response builds on its core competencies and focuses on ensuring principled, accountable, and needs-based programming.
