The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is responding to its 17th Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak, confirmed in May 2026 and affecting Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces. The situation remains complex and evolving, with transmission occurring in both community and health-care settings. Response efforts are led by national authorities in a context shaped by health system limitations, logistical constraints, insecurity, displacement, and diverse community perceptions influencing health-seeking behaviors.
UNICEF supports the Government through a multi-sectoral approach, focusing on community engagement, surveillance, infection prevention, and the continuity of essential services for vulnerable populations. This context requires strong coordination, adaptability, and cultural sensitivity to support effective and equitable response efforts, particularly for children and at-risk communities.
How can you make a difference?
The Democratic Republic of the Congo faces recurring outbreaks of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), with Bunia and the surrounding health zones in Ituri province identified as high-risk areas due to population mobility, community resistance, and the fragility of the health system. The Ebola response requires rapid, coordinated communication efforts that are adapted to the cultural context in order to inform the public, combat misinformation, and promote life-saving behaviors. The situation in Bunia is particularly complex, marked by security constraints, community mistrust, the spread of rumors, and limited access to reliable sources of information. In this context, effective external communication, engagement with the media, and real-time content production are essential to support the overall response. UNICEF plays a key role in risk communication, community engagement, and advocacy to protect affected populations, especially the most vulnerable children.
To strengthen communication capacity at the field level, a Communication Officer (Multimedia) NOA/TA is required to support the timely production of high-quality multimedia content and to enhance visibility, public awareness, and trust in the Ebola response.
